, sara. every u.s. president hopes to be the one that ends the israeli/palestinian crisis. but peace has rarely seemed less likely. earlier i spoke with a senior fellow at the hoover institution. he singled out the obama administration for what he calls its indifference. >> we have to go back and re-examine the diplomatic setting, if you will. people will be pushed to say, we can't afford to ignore this region. we can't afford to ignore this conflict because we look back on the last four years and the indifference, if you will, of the obama administration to what's happening on the west bank in gaza. and i think there will be pressure. there will be pressure from egypt, from turkey. there will be pressure from qatar. these are the places that are most sympathetic to hamas. >> discussing the u.s. response to the israeli/palestinian crisis. >>> we've got a lot more planned for you this saturday night. here's what else we're working on. the new reality and a rude awakening for the gop. get with it or keep losing. >>> the new faces of congress, gay, bisexual, hindu. meet those making capitol

filtering system not by the fbi but probably by nsa which looks for any abuse or problem with use of government e-mails. >> right. i think the situation as we ascertained from everything this evening, the fbi was clearly investigating general petraeus. how that started has not been clearly found. what we then know happened is they had this information presumably for quite some time. for me one of the key questions is when did the white house get ahold of this information, and did they make a conscious decision for this not to be released to the media until after the election. i'll turn to barbara starr, if i may. >> piers, i think this is the key question in front of everybody. how extraordinary would it be that you have this type of fbi investigation into the cia director and the president is not informed about it? this seems to really beg disbelief at the moment. the word is circulating that the president was not aware, that only once petraeus came to him, but it really seems to beg belief that someone in the white house didn't know that the fbi didn't inform the white house in

to be a man. william isn't bitter. he's a patriot with ambition and generosity and a dream that humbled us. >>> good evening. breaking news. you're looking live at the white house where on the outside, everything looks calm but behind closed doors, an administration in panic dealing with the petraeus sex scandal that threatens to spin out of control less than one week after president obama's re-election. big questions tonight. what did the white house know and when did it know it. the four-star general has said to be devastated about the scandal, sparked by his affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, uncovered during an fbi investigation. the bureau was looking into so-called jealous e-mails purchase reportedly send by broadwell to kelley, a petraeus family friend. tonight, the "washington post" has reported that as president obama rearranges his national security team, it is considering asking senator john kerry to serve on the team and the fbi agent was barred from taking part in the case for allegedly sending shirtless pictures of himself to a woman involved in the case. meanwhile,

night i say right off the top, can any of us get our heads round this and how much more ridiculous can it get, and lo and behold, it gets more ridiculous. barbara starr, let's try and get to what we believe to be the facts behind all the kind of lurid, titillating headlines. a second general today, petraeus' successor in afghanistan, general john allen, a marine corps four star general, current nominee to be the new nato supreme allied commander, so a very big fish indeed in the military. he is apparently at the center of a scandal involving 30,000 documents, all pages or e-mails or whatever that he exchanged with this second woman, the other other woman, jill kelley. what do we know about the content of this? because it's not as simple as simply 30,000 e-mails, right? >> well, that's the real question. what's really involved here. the spin machine is in full cycle on this one. the pentagon says it's about 30,000 pages of documents. they may not all be e-mails, but a good portion of them are e-mails between allen and jill kelley. pentagon official telling reporters today in his words,

will this revelation exact the u.s. intelligence community? joining me now is fran townsend and bob baer and suzanne kelly. suzanne, what more can you tell us about the probe into the relationship with paula broadwell? do we know how long this has been going on? >> we don't know how long it was going on, but just the -- so they're the ones that would look into accusations of inappropriate access to classified information. individuals that hold clearances, are they doing what they need to be doing to make sure that information stays safe? is there any opportunity whatsoever that that information could be exploited by either a spy or anyone else who shouldn't have access to that information. so the fact that they were the ones looking into this, tells you that, you know, they were concerned about some of the e-mail things. let's back up for a moment. this was a tip that they were given. that there was this relationship going on between the two. what they have dug into were things like e-mails, texts, things like that. and they know the two, if it turns out to be paula, and we can't confirm it is, and

in the ground with both sides using it for their propaganda purposes. how dangerous do you think it is over there given what we are seeing? hamas has threatened tremendous retribution talk about the gates of hell opened? >> well, i'm more concerned of egypt. the muslim brotherhood is in power now, and it is unsteady power. they have to find the fine line between the secular military and the sopponents. if there is a battle, it is inside egypt. >> and we were talking today earlier to find out that one by one all of the major security breaches are down played and in the end, we are left with general petraeus having had an affair, an affair discovered by the fbi under different circumstance, and in this circumstance, could he have ridden it out? >> well, he, himself, could not ride it out. he did the honorable thing and resigned. he knew that the announcement that he had been having an affair with someone not his wife, he knows the affect on this organization and the institution, and both the institution of the agency and of the military. and so he did exactly what one would expect of an honor
